Syrian Healthcare Sector Facts

The Health Sector in the Syrian Arab Republic is divided between several sides:
 
- The Ministry of Health included 2053 health units (1864 units are related directly to MOH). The remaining units are related to private bodies such as primary health care centers, emergency medical points, specialized medical centers and comprehensive clinics. There are also 100 Hospitals: 76 General Hospitals are under the Ministry of Health purview as well as 33 General Assemblies of Hospitals, until the end of 2019.
- 14 Educational Hospital are under the Ministry of Higher Education purview.
- The Ministries of Defense and interior are by military medical services and their medical providers (dispensaries and hospitals).
- There are community centers, medical clinics and 391 accredited private hospitals.
 
The Syrian Health Sector Damages during the Syrian Crisis:
As in all sectors, the Health Sector in Syria has been heavily affected, especially the Ministry of Health. It suffered damage to approximately 685 health units between partial and total damage. 46 hospitals were exposed to mentioned structural damage (10 fully and 36 partially damage hospitals in 2019) as well as the hospitals of the Ministry of Higher Education such as Al Kindi Hospital in Aleppo Governorate. Moreover, the damage of some pharmaceutical factories in different regions resulted in out of service units or working in alternative locations.
 
However, the new Syrian Government initiates a Comprehensive National Program for Post-Crisis Syria focusing on recovery and reconstruction. It involves rebuilding infrastructure, restoring essential services like healthcare, and ensuring a transition from the relief phase to sustainability. Concurrently, UN Agencies like ESCWA have developed frameworks such as the National Agenda for the Future of Syria (NAFS). Other efforts include the National Development Program for Post-War Syria (Syria Strategic Plan 2030). It serves as a consultative framework for government, private sector, and civil society plans.
